About us

St. John's is a church alive in the Holy Spirit, experiencing God in worship, sacrament, prayer, scripture, community, and service. We are a Bible-centered congregation, nourished by the Eucharist and blessed by the historic liturgy. We have been active in many aspects of the Renewal for 25 years--the Alpha Program, Cursillo, Life in the Spirit, for example.

Visitors and newcomers frequently comment that they "sensed the loving presence of Jesus during the worship."

St. John's is a family. Our congregation includes many young families with children, single people, couples, mature adults from the nearby Sun City community. Therefore we have programs, ministries, and events for all ages. Community is nurtured by a number of House Groups that meet weekly for prayer, Bible study, and fellowship. Many declare that they returned after a first visit "because of the acceptance and love of the members."

St. John's is an Episcopal Church which means that it combines Catholic liturgical worship with a Protestant emphasis on Holy Scripture. The Episcopal Church is a branch of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, founded by Jesus Christ. Our roots go back to the Church of England which has had continuous life since 314 A.D. when the first English bishops were recorded.

St. John's is catholic. Most Americans relate the term catholic to the Roman Catholic church, but they are not the only catholics. (We are often called Anglo, or English Catholic.) The term summarizes our commitment to maintain that body of doctrine and discipline revealed by Christ and the Apostles and passed down from our forefathers for nearly 2000 years. We are orthodox; our basic beliefs are summarized in the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds.

St. John's is Protestant. The reforms of the 16th century returned the Church to a focus on salvation by faith, the authority of the scripture, and a personal relationship with Jesus. We are evangelical, sharing the good news of God's redeeming love with others.
