St. John’s News and Upcoming Events

† Welcome Class TODAY at 10:30 in the “Old Sacramento Building”. Adults who are
visitors, inquirers, new members, or anyone who has questions are welcome to attend.
Topics include: Life at St. John’s. What is the Episcopal Church? A Look at the Bible, plus other topics. Drop your child/children off at Sunday School and be reunited with them just before Eucharist.
† Men’s Retreat is next week end, February 26-28 at Springs of the Living Waters in Chico. Fr. Christopher Seal from Emmanuel Church in Nevada City is the facilitator. This retreat promises to be an excellent Christ-filled weekend filled with humor, good food and lots of fellowship. The cost is $180 for a single room, $135 for a double. A very limited amount of scholarship money is available. If you need scholarship money contact Russ Sherman or Pat
Paterson.
† Father Cliff Haggenjos’ first service at St. John’s will be Sunday, March 21. Be sure to be here to welcome him to St. John’s. The staff are making name tags for adult parish members to wear so Father Cliff will get to know us all by name.
† The Brothers of St. Andrew and Daughters of the King are going to organize another Adopt-A-Box For Our Soldiers. Please see the enclosed insert.
† First Communion Classes start today, Feb. 21.
† Lenten Soup and Study Series continues Thursdays– 1st session 4:30 pm Supper at 6 pm and 2nd session beginning at 7 pm.
† St. John’s Lenten Quiet Day sponsored by the Daughters of the King will be on March 27 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Light snacks will be available before and during breaks. All adults are encouraged to attend. The theme for this years Quiet Day is “Walking through the challenges of your faith”.
† Clergy Conference Feb. 22-24. Clergy will be at Diocesan Conference. Please call the church office for pastoral needs; clergy will then be contacted.
† Feeding at the Gathering Inn. St. John’s crew will be preparing a delicious meal for the guests of the Gathering Inn at Alliance Christian Church at 5 p.m on Feb. 24th. Anyone who would like to see first hand what it takes to be a chef for Christ is invited to come and help. Contact Pat & Joyce Paterson 780-3396.
† Cursillo weekend is coming up in mid-March 2010. This a jam packed weekend of listening, learning, and loving, along with a small amount of participation (if you want)...and it’s all about Jesus! Please talk to Debi Hart or Paul Frazee about attending Cursillo. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss.
† Young Adults (ages 18-35ish) are invited to join the Young Adult Bible Study at Trinity House 803 Figueroa St. Folsom, Ca. 5:30 to 7 pm Sunday evenings. Call 985-2495 for more info. No meeting on Feb. 7. Will resume next week.

* Men’s Bible Study: How to Handle the Word of God

*Jesus in Egypt class resumes with Anne Rice’s novel Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. Ever wondered what Jesus might have experienced during the journey back to Nazareth from Egypt and the next few years? Anne Rice’s well researched book gives us insight into the culture and history of the Jews during Christ’s childhood. It also provides some fun discussion.
† Needs: Anyone have a relatively small (like 19” or so) TV set with DVD capability that could be loaned or given to the church? It will only be used to play DVDs. Please call Pat Cannariato if you can supply this.
† West Park Book Club March meeting has been cancelled because of Lenten Studies. Next meeting: April 8, 6:30 p.m. at the home of Joyce Paterson. We will discuss The Alchemist by Paul Coelho. This is a simple fable based on timeless truths in a highly unique situation. Santiago, a shepherd boy, dreams of seeing the world. Along the way he meets many spiritual messengers. The story has comic charm and dramatic tension as well as specific wisdom about becoming self-empowered and believing in dreams.

The Collect for the Second Sunday in Lent

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Reading Genesis 15:1-12,17-18

The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, "Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." But Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" And Abram said, "You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir." But the word of the LORD came to him, "This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir." He brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your descendants be." And he believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness.
Then he said to him, "I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess." But he said, "O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?" He said to him, "Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon." He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him.
When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates."

Second Reading Philippians 3:17-4:1

Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.

The Gospel Luke 13:31-35

Some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you." He said to them, "Go and tell that fox for me, 'Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.' Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'"
